Winter can be harsh on your skin. The cold air outside and the dry heat indoors strip your skin of its natural moisture, leaving it dry, flaky, and irritated. Just as we swap our light summer wardrobe for cozy layers in winter, our skincare routine needs a seasonal update too. The secret to keeping your skin hydrated and protected during these dry months lies in one magical ingredient: shea butter.
Shea butter is a winter skincare essential, known for its deep moisturizing and protective properties. And the best part? You don’t need to rely on store-bought creams with questionable additives you can’t even pronounce. (More info on switching to non toxic products in our blog post here).
Here’s a simple recipe for a luxurious shea butter face cream you can whip up at home.
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
- 2 teaspoons aloe vera juice
Directions:
- Melt the Shea Butter: Use a double boiler or microwave in short intervals, stirring until the shea butter is fully melted.
- Mix the Ingredients: Pour the melted shea butter into a bowl. Add jojoba oil and aloe vera juice. Whisk for about 2 minutes.
- Cool the Mixture: Refrigerate the mixture for 15–20 minutes until it begins to firm up but is not fully solidified.
- Whip It: Using a handheld or stand mixer, whip the mixture until it’s light and creamy.
- Store and Use: Transfer your whipped face lotion into a clean glass jar. Use it as needed to keep your face soft, hydrated, and protected throughout the winter.
Yield: Approximately 4 ounces
Shelf Life: Up to 6 months if stored in a cool, dry place
